Commuting to Whistler
Whistler (57 km *)
Squamish is located halfway between Vancouver and Whistler – and as the largest community in the corridor, combined with the high housing prices in Whistler, it is no surprise that many, many Whistler workers make Squamish their home. The improvements to Highway 99, as well as the growth of Squamish and the continued lack of affordable options in Whistler ensure this will be the case for years to come. In good conditions, the drive can be less than 45 minutes, with numerous passing lanes and wide shoulders making the drive relatively stress free.
* Note that as Squamish is a very spread out community, someone living in Brackendale may be as much as 8 km closer to Whistler.
Greyhound Coach – Squamish to Whistler
Beyond driving, there are other commuting options, including the Greyhound Bus. If you buy multiple trips to Whistler through the Greyhound office, the cost of a trip can be less than $7 each way.
There is also a very reasonably priced, frequent transit service between Squamish and Whistler in the winter.
Car Pooling
With so many people going from Squamish to Whistler. finding a car-pooling or ride share option to Whistler is usually not a problem if your schedule and destination are not too unique. A high percentage of the Whistler working population, particularly long term workers and managers, live in Squamish.
The Jack Bell Foundation runs many cars and vans from Squamish to Whistler, and many people set up their own, informal ride shares.
Skiing or Boarding in Whistler
Of course, one of the great attractions to living in Squamish is the proximity to North America’s premier Winter Resort destination. With world class skiing only 45 minutes away, and world class city the same distance to the south, Squamish is perfect enthusiastic skiers and boarders who cannot quite live in a resort full time, but want to be close when the snow conditions are ideal. Don't forget to pop by the local 7-11 for discounted lift tickets (usually..).
In Summer, Squamish also allows easy access to other Whistler activities, such as the Downhill Mountain bike park.
Commuting to Vancouver
Vancouver to Squamish (67 km)
With the completion of the upgrades to Highway 99, Squamish is now closer to Vancouver that ever before. Depending on traffic and road conditions, and how you drive, of course, the commute time from Downtown Squamish to Downtown Vancouver can be less than 50 minutes. The drive is also much more spectacular that the drive in from other areas around Vancouver such as the Fraser Valley, with light traffic, and amazing Ocean and Mountain Views a great improvement for many over the bumper to bumper crawl on Highway 1.
Much of the Highway between the West Vancouver and Squamish now has passing lanes, and the notorious sharp corners have been straightened out – removing the most objectionable parts of the old Highway. Rumble strips, concrete barriers and reflective road markings make the Highway safer than ever.
If you need to commute to Vancouver, whether it is one day a week, or 5, you will be in good company as approximately 1,000 people per day make the journey (based on MoT traffic counts and estimates).

The District of Squamish is also actively looking for ways to improve the transportation options between Vancouver and Squamish and recently conducted a survey of Squamish-Vancouver commuters to see who is going where, and when.
